Like
all children, students with developmental disabilities grow
into adolescence with physically maturing bodies and a host
of emerging social and sexual feelings and needs. Before these
changes begin it is important to provide factual information
in a positive and constructive way that is both clear and developmentally
appropriate.
Two
new kits from Marsh Media help address sexuality education in
accordance with recommendations from the Sex Information and
Education Council of the U.S. (SIECUS), with focus on:
A
Girl’s Guide to Growing Up and A
Boy’s Guide to Growing Up are designed for children
with mild to moderate disabilities. These reassuring titles
are clear, practical and positive and are intended for the following
special populations:
Students
with:
- Developmental
disabilities or delays
- Intrusive
behavior or mental illness
- Down
Syndrome
- Autism
Spectrum Disorder, including Asperger’s Syndrome
- Learning
disabilities
- Behavioral
disabilities
- Communicative
disorders
Each
comprehensive kit has been developed in close collaboration
with school nurses and curriculum consultants. A concise five-chapter
format introduces the following important topics:
-
External anatomy
-
Physical and emotional changes of puberty
- Health
- Hygiene
- Privacy
and safety
Each
component part conforms to the five-chapter format, reinforcing
information and skills, and allowing for instructional breaks
and review.
Kit
components include:
|
- An
instructional video. Calmly reassuring and upbeat,
each video presents concrete, gender-specific facts
about adolescent growth and development. Bob Walkenhorst’s
original music adds cheer to the specially uncomplicated
narration. The visuals include live-action children
ingeniously framed to correlate with colorful and clear
illustrations.
|
|
- A
comprehensive teaching guide. Organized to parallel
the chapter format of the video, the teaching guide
includes complete lesson plans, 13 reproducible worksheets
and a detailed bibliography for teachers and parents.
Teaching guides are manageable and convenient for a
variety of educational settings, suitable for a dedicated
classroom of children with special needs, or as a whole
school resource.
|
|
- Student
booklets. Packaged in handy packs of 10, these practical,
colorful booklets are designed with student needs in
mind. Complementing the instructional video, the gender-specific
booklets match the information and illustrations shown
in each video. Particularly useful for review, the booklets
provide an essential take-home resource to be shared
with parents.
