The following sample letter to parents includes a suggested curriculum outline and was created by educators of middle school students with special needs. You are welcome to use and adapt the ideas below for your own classroom purposes.

 

Dear Life Skills Parent:

 

I am pleased to inform you that in my fourth hour class, Life Skills, we will begin a new program entitled A Boy’s Guide to Growing Up and A Girl’s Guide to Growing Up. As the titles suggest, the program will cover material related to changing bodies, hygiene, healthy habits, and privacy/safety. Our school nurse and a district transition coordinator will be our main facilitators in the lessons.

Below is a list of the material to be covered and dates scheduled for those discussions. Mrs. Douglas has copies of the materials if you would like to preview any of the curricula. She will also be available on open conference night on November 3rd, and scheduled conference day on December 15th, if you have further questions.

 

January 15: Introduction – What is change?
